Chairman’s Message

First, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for being appointed Chairman of the 2016 edition of the Singapore Creative CSR Awards. Having been involved as a juror since the inception of the Awards in 2014, the Awards is close to my heart, and I am comforted to see it grow from strength to strength over the past couple of years. More importantly, it is heartening to see an ever-increasing number of companies embarking on creative corporate-giving initiatives.

Increasingly, the soft power of a country hinges greatly on how the lower rungs of society are treated, and how the environment is cared for. By breeding a culture of selflessness and of socio-ecological responsibility, a country can truly be seen as a great one. Companies can play an important role in enhancing Singapore’s soft power by embarking upon Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

A creative CSR initiative can be very powerful. It can create a philanthropic spark amongst a company’s employees, making them more empathetic towards the needy members of their community, or making them more environmentally conscious. This spark can even possibly culminate in a domino effect or pay-it-forward effect that touches the lives of thousands beyond their initial targeted beneficiaries.

I hope that the spirit of giving, helping, and of improving the lives of others or our environment will become more pervasive in the corporate culture of companies in Singapore, and of society at large. Inculcating and building this spirit is truly a journey. I encourage companies to fearlessly take baby steps first, and then eventually, have innovative corporate-giving imprinted into their organisational DNA.

Once again, I would like to thank 4As for giving me the opportunity to be part of this Awards that honours the meaningful work of the participating companies.
